Motivation Monday Capture The Right Image

Motivation Monday Capture The Right Image Not too long ago, someone told me I needed a better photo for my Twitter bio/avatar. I asked why and the response included something along the lines that my photo didnt quite capture my spunk. Well, I still havent done this. But it did get me thinking. How can a photo capture spunk or any other trait for that matter. Michael Cavotta is doing just that. Two of my colleagues recently had new head shots taken by Michael and according to Laura Labovich, Michael takes an ingenious approach to head shotshe incorporates your words (the words that you feel define you) into your pictures. What youll find on Cavottas Facebook page are three words the person wants to convey as well as the photo. He also includes a little back history about the person he shoots too. This is great for additional branding! So if you havent given much thought to your headshot, maybe it is time that you did. Ive seen some really horrible shots recently and your professional image is just too important to overlook or destroy because you used a bad photo. After all, if resume writing were easy then we’d all have the perfect resumes we need. The fact is that resume-writing is a challenge for even the best writers. Still, there is one thing that you can do to simplify that writing process and enhance your odds of success: know your audience. In other words, think about what hiring managers and recruiters look for in a resume. What do they want to see when they scrutinize that resume you worked so hard to create? We have the answers! What is the Most Important Thing Employers Look for on a Resume?Let’s get this one out of the way right off the bat! When it comes to the most important thing that every employer wants to see on your resume, it’s simple: clarity. You need to be able to sum up your experience and value-added proposition in a short and succinct way.Remember, hiring managers and recruiters often look at dozens of resumes as they go about their business. They rare ly take the time to carefully evaluate a resume unless it can quickly capture their attention. Here is what hiring managers look at first when reviewing your resume:The Top 5 Things Employers Look  at First  on a ResumeNameCurrent Employer/Previous EmployerStart and End Dates for Your Most Recent PositionsEducationAchievements Your Work ExperienceHere is a heat map from a study done by the Ladders on what hiring managers look at when reviewing a resume:As you can see The one on the right was looked at more thoroughly than the one of the left because of its clear and concise format. Our resume writing services can help ensure your resume stands out to a hiring manager. Check out our resume writing services. The only thing you can really control is making sure your achievements stand out and that the information is tailored to the position youre applying for.You also need to highlight your achievements to ensure you stand out from the competition. Quantifiable achievements really captu re the attention of a hiring manager. Here is an example of a responsibility on a resume:“Responsible for seeking out new marketing campaigns to increase revenue.”Let’s see this reworded to sound like an achievement:Increased revenue by 21% by implementing new paid marketing channels including Google Adwords, Adroll and Bing Ads.  See the difference? The second description shows an actual accomplishment with quantifiable achievements. This is much more effective than the first description. You also need to  develop a summary statement that can present your case in a compelling way.We wrote a good post here on how to write a good resume summary.  If that is interesting enough, then the employer will invest the time needed to more carefully analyze the rest of your resume. Fail to capture their attention, however, and you can rest assured that your resume will be cast aside. You also need to ensure your resume is optimized for applicant tracking systems which most employers use tod ay.75% of resumes are automatically rejected by ATS which means they never get reviewed by human eyes. We wont get into that here but we wrote a good post here on  testing your resume for an ATS.What Do Employers Look for First on a Resume?Whenever an employer picks up a resume, their eyes and mind are instantly searching for one thing: a reason to continue reading! Some job-seekers try to focus on creative language and clever content to spark interest, but that can be distracting. The average hiring manager or recruiter won’t be swayed by fluff or flourish. Instead, he or she will be looking for potential value for the company. So, if your summary manages to capture their interest, you still need the rest of the resume to convince them that you’re the right candidate for the job.To achieve that objective, you need to craft a narrative that properly explains the value that you can bring to the position. Why? Because it is all about value!Your resume is basically a sales tool that you use to land an interview. It’s the initial introduction that gets your foot in the door so that you close that sale. And make no mistake: job-hunting is a sales process, and your job is to sell yourself to the employer so that he can see how hiring you will benefit his firm. What Do Recruiters Look for in a Resume?Recruiters have specific needs when they’re trying to locate the right candidates for their clients. To satisfy those needs, you need to focus on the one thing they look for more than any other: your roles and  achievements  in previous jobs. When you’re tailoring your resume for a recruiter, you need to make sure that your previous roles, achievements and actual responsibilities are clear. You also need to ensure that the job titles and duties align with the job you’re seeking. Why? Because recruiters aren’t going to spend a lot of time trying to find a creative way to make your resume fit their needs. What Do Hiring Managers Look for in Resumes?Hiring manager s and recruiters have specific things that they want to see in a resume. For hiring managers, however, that list of essential ingredients can be more demanding. To satisfy that hiring manger, your resume should include the following details.Alignment with the Job PostingIf you think that you can just send the same resume to multiple employers, think again. Hiring managers are always looking for candidates whose resume aligns with the job in question. Every good job posting will include details about the skills and experience that the company wants to see.You should tailor your resume to ensure that you are properly highlighting those skills and experiences. That will make it easier for the hiring manager to quickly see that you meet those basic qualifications.Remember, hiring managers and recruiters need to make snap decisions. You can use these details to help them quickly identify you as a viable candidate for the job.Your MotivationsIt is not enough to just show value in your res ume. Hiring managers and recruiters will also want to see that you’re properly motivated. When they read your resume, they should be left with the impression that you’re dedicated to your employer’s success. That means making the resume about something more than your needs. The best way to show this motivation is to highlight your accomplishments and the reasons why you worked to succeed in previous jobs.Quantified ImpactDetails matter when you’re talking about your achievements. Nobody wants to read about how you helped increase your company’s sales unless you can provide specific benefits. So, instead of just noting those increased sales, try using real numbers. Be specific about the results that you achieved. For example:“Successfully created an innovative sales program that increased sales by 32% in the first half of 2015, improved customer acquisition by 12%, and enhanced client retention by 14%.”Those real numbers demonstrate real results that will catch that hirin g manager’s eye!The Right KeywordsFor both hiring managers and recruiters, keywords can be essential for success. Now, employers won’t generally be conscious of those keywords in your resume, but that doesn’t make them any less important. Keywords are vital when dealing with recruiters, since most won’t be able to find you online without them. Their searches of sites like LinkedIn will never lead them to you if you fail to use the right keywords.Hiring managers are a slightly different story, of course. With them, you need keywords just to get your resume to their desks. Without the right keywords, your resume won’t get past the Applicant Tracking Systems, which means human eyes may never get to see it. You can find many of the relevant keywords in that job posting. You should also try to think like the hiring manager, and imagine which keywords you would use if you had to fill that job.Learn What Hiring Managers and Recruiters Want, and Enhance Your Resume!Resumes can be a challenge to create, but there are ways to ease that pressure. When you know what hiring managers and recruiters are looking for in a resume, you can create the tools you need to land those critical interviews. Just focus on these basic elements, and you’ll soon find that your resume is more effective than ever. You Landed the Interview Now What You Need to Know to Land the Offer -

You Landed the Interview Now What You Need to Know to Land the Offer -I recently met a recruiter for a Fortune 50 company who interviews at least 10 candidates every day for zu sich employer. As we all know, hiring managers are receiving anywhere from dozens to hundreds of applications for most open positions these days. Given that atmosphere, this recruiter offered the following piece of advice If you get an interview with a company, your resume has already convinced them that you could do the jobyou just need to prove that youre a good fit for their team. The recruiter was not suggesting that an interview should be a relaxing experience for anyone. However, she emphasized presenting yourself as a good fit for the companys culture just as much as explaining your previous work experience. She recommends contemplating a personal mantra of you can work with me before and during your interview. As long as you smile and do your best to convince the interviewer that they can work with you , youll walk out knowing youve given the interview your best shot.If youre like me, your parents raised you to keep your poker face on in certain situationslike dating or buying a car. Well, that concept doesnt apply to job interviews. If you really want the job after your interview, you need to show your kralle Let the interviewer know how much you like the company or that youve succeeded in a similar role in the past. If you think of something you wish youd said after leaving the building, your thank you note is a great place to include your final thoughts.Rememberif your resume makes it through the hundreds in the pile to get you an interview, youve got the skills to do the job. Your goal should be to leave the interviewer thinking, I want to work with them For more interview, job search and resume advice visit our blog. Reasons Your Job Search Isnt Working

Reasons Your Job Search Isnt Working Most of us have hit that job search wall, thinking that leidhing is working and the right role will never arrive. In my experience as a career coach, when things stall in a job search, it can usually be traced back to one of behauptung common mistakes. Great news Theyre super easy to fix.1. Youre elend partalizing. When sending cover letters and resumes, it can be tempting to send the same documents out over and over. But recruiters and hiring managers are unlikely to engage with a canned or generic application. If youre excited enough to apply, take a moment to pick out the key points and responsibilities and highlight those in your resume and cover letter. You dont have to reinvent the wheel and create a brand new document every time simply take a moment to notice how the bullets on the job description compare to your resume and cover letter and make changes to ensure alignment.Instead tailor your message and keywords to speak the language of th e organization.2. Youre going for anything. If youre not clear on what you want, it can be hard to personalize submissions and activate your networkingnetwork. While I often hear from people that they are looking for anything, that is very seldom true. You dont need to have an exact job title to share. Instead, you can focus on key skills youd like to use or the type of organization that is of interest. Sharing these details with people in your network can help them spot the right opportunities and make impactful introductions.Instead identify roles and responsibilities youd be excited about and share the details to help others help you.3. Youre only using job boards.Conducting your search solely on job boards can be both ineffective and demotivating. Consider spending 20% to 25% of your job search time online and the rest of your time networking and targeting companies that are of interest. Setting up keyword alerts (like the ones you can set on Fairygodboss) and receiving daily ema ils can be an effective way to use job boards without going into the rabbit hole of pages and pages of search results. A daily email will ensure you see targeted jobs as soon as they are available.Instead activate your network so your connections can also look for suitable opportunities.4. Youre quick to dismiss.Keep an open mind when it comes to job opportunities. If a role sounds exciting, why not have a conversation? We tend to think that applying for a job means that we have to take it, but that isnt the case. So, if you dont tick all of the bullets or there is one thing that is giving you pause, throw your hat in the ring. Theres plenty of time to learn mora about the role before accepting.Instead learn about potential roles and careers with an open mind.5. You focus on receiving rather than giving. If youre walking into networking conversations thinking about whats in it for you and determining if people can be useful, you will likely be disappointed. Approach these conversatio ns with the intention to get to know new people and learn about your desired role or industry. Approaching with curiosity will allow you to open up and welcome conversations rather than judging them instantly. People will be able to sense your intentions and openness and will shy away from a conversation that is focused on what can you do for me?Instead network with the goal of learning and supporting others. 6. Youre out of balance.Ive had it with people saying that looking for a job is a full-time job. This does not have to be the case if youre making efficient use of your job search efforts. Set clear goals around the amount of time youll spend on reaching out to people, applying for jobs and catching up with your network (in person and online). During your downtime, it is essential to take care of yourself. Youll perform far better in interviews and keep better track of your search efforts if you are well rested and have the time to do things you enjoy. Give yourself permission to have a dinner out with friends, hit the gym or just relax during your search to ensure you can be most efficient with the time that you are searching.Instead have clear goals around your job search and take time to do things that keep you happy and well rested. Remember you cant job search 24/7.7. Youre stuck in your old role. When youre thinking about moving on to a new role, are your thoughts focused on what you are looking for and the opportunities you will have when you leave, or are you stuck thinking about what youre leaving, how awful your boss is or how sorry they will be when you go? We often see what were looking for, so try to flip around the things youre pushing away from. Is your boss a micromanager? Look for roles with more autonomy. Do you feel like number in a large organization? Focus on roles that are at smaller companies where you can wear many hats. Worried about a career change? Consider how your transferrable skills can be applied. To help you leave your role behind, you can write out a list of the thing youve learned in your role and how those things will help you in your job search. This can help you leave on the right foot rather than a bitter one. The sooner you release that weight, the easier it will be to welcome a new beginning.Instead focus on what youre reaching toward and your long-term goals. These job search mistakes can creep in when we least expect it. Take some time to reflect on how youre conducting your search and if there are any opportunities to make small changes that will have a big impact.--Alyson Garrido is passionate about helping women advance their careers and find jobs they will enjoy.
